The Port of Callao in Peru is operating to full capacity despite a workers’ strike in demonstration against the proposed privatisation of the Lima-based facility, according to a report by La República.
Mario Arbulú, president of the National Ports Agency (Enapu) refuted claims made by worker union Sutramporc that the strike is resulting in important losses for the export sector.
“We have a contingency plan in place,” Mr Arbulú is reported as saying in La República. “We have got workers in to operate the port.”
Mr Arbulú assured that the gantry cranes are working to 100 per cent capacity and that ships entering the terminal are being attended to without problem.
The last strike to affect the Port of Callao lasted 20 days and resulted in losses of US$700m, according to figures from private operators Asppor and Apam.
