India’s onion prices have continued their return to normal levels this week, fetching Rs4-13.50 per kg (US$0.09-0.30) in New Delhi yesterday as new production flows into the market.

Tomato prices have also started to fall, available for Rs2.50-10 per kg in New Delhi’s huge Azadpur wholesale market, reported the Press Trust of India.

New production from Nashik in Maharashtra was a major contributor behind the fall in onion prices, according to the Delhi Agriculture Marketing Board (DAMB).

“Onion prices have come under control,” said DAMB chairman Brahm Yadav. “The wholesale market rate of onion is between Rs4-13.50 per kg. The prices can go down further in the coming days.”

Onion supplies are also coming in from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Retail prices are sitting at around Rs20-30 (US$0.44-0.66) per kg in Delhi, down from a peak of Rs80 (US$1.75) per kg in December.
