After more than seven years of preparation, the Ukrainian Parliament finally adopted the law on organic production on 21 April.
Certification of Ukrainian organic farms in accordance with EU regulations was initiated in the late 1990s, mainly by Dutch and German organic companies.
Sincethen, the area under organic agriculture in Ukraine has constantly increased constantly, reaching 270,226ha in 2010, according to the Organic Federation of Ukraine.
The number of organic farms has also increased, from only around 31 in 2002 to more than 140 today.
The value of organic production in the country totalled some €112–160m per year in the 2006-2010 period.
