IN Kay Bee Alphonso mangos

Unexpected hailstorms may have destroyed over half the mango crop in the far northern Indian province of Uttarakhand, reports Daily India.

Local horticultural officials predict regional volumes will be significantly lower than previous years, when around 13,000 tonnes were produced.

Farmers have incurred 60 per cent losses in over 150 orchards across the region, they said.

"Different varieties of mangoes, like Langra, Dasheri, Chaunsa, have been destroyed. I don't think will get any value for the 200 boxes of mangoes that we have sent to market," one mango grower, Rajinder Singh Rawat, told the publication.

Indian mango cultivation covers an area of 2.5m hectares, and is concentrated in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, according to Daily India.
