Banana activities at Ecuador’s Noboa Group have apparently been paralysed due to the closure of business at two subsidiaries for a period of seven days, according to a report by El Universo.

Banacont (fourth-biggest banana exporter in Ecuador) and carton manufacturer Industria Cartonera Ecuatoriana were shut down on Monday 30 May by Ecuador’s inland revenue service (SRI) for allegedly failing to produce 2010 tax payment documents.

The companies are unable to market their fruit or manufacture boxes for banana exports from the Port of Guayaquil as a result, the report said.

Losses from the action will surpass US$4m per week, according to Douglas Romero, who controls the Noboa Group’s companies.

Lawyers for Banacont and Cartonera claim the tax statements were handed to SRI.
