E coli

Defra, the UK government department for environment, food and rural affairs, has published details of how UK salad growers can apply for support under the new EU scheme to compensate producers affected by the German E coli outbreak.

However, UK trade association the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) is reportedly continuing to press Defra for compensation for all those affected throughout the supply chain.

The scheme is worth some €210m across the EU and is open to growers of tomatoes, lettuce, endives, cucumbers, sweet peppers and courgettes.

The scheme applies to products that were not harvested or were withdrawn from sale between 18 and 30 June.

Agriculture minister Jim Paice commented: “British salad growers are facing a tough time through no fault of their own and I urge those affected to act quickly. This funding is only available for a very limited time and it’s vital that UK producers don’t miss out.”
