Tesco has signalled it intends to expand its presence in China with the opening of a 240,000 m2 logistics centre in the eastern coastal province of Zhejiang.

According to International Supermarket News, the logistics centre, which opened last week, will supply 53 supermarkets in the East China region, but will also be able to provide the regional centres of Shenyang, Tianjin and Guangzhou with the company’s self-made products.

The retailer currently operates 96 supermarkets and 12 express stores in the country, with the majority of its operations located around Shanghai.

According to the news source, Walmart is currently the largest foreign-owned retailer in the country with 333 stores nationwide, followed by Carrefour and then Tesco.

The Chinese retail market grew by 16.3 per cent year on year for the first quarter of 2011 to reach a value of US$62.7bn.

The retailer also plans to provide a nationwide online clothes shopping service as well as an online grocery service for Shanghai next year.
