Algerian newspaper El Moudjahid has reported that prices of fruit and vegetables in the country have increased sharply since the beginning of Ramadan two weeks ago.
Tomatoes have risen to DA70 (€0.67) per kilo and carrots to DA60 (€0.57), while apples, grapes, bananas and peaches have increased to DA200 (€1.91), DA180 (€1.72), DA130 (€1.24) and DA120 (€1.14) respectively.
One trader told El Moudjahid that the increase in tomato prices was due to the high temperatures, which affected the quality of large volumes, while another claimed the general rise in prices was due to speculation.
Despite the soaring prices, however, consumption has remained high throughout Ramadan, El Moudjahid reported.
