In Austria, Rewe Group has reportedly announced that it will be trialling payments via mobile phone in one of its Billa stores, according to Austrian Wirtschaftsblatt.

Planet Retail reported that SPAR Austria is also planning to offer payment by mobile phone with T-Mobile (Austria), which is Rewe's partner for the project.

However, it is so far unclear which kind of technology is being used in the test because the vast majority of phones are not yet equipped withNear Field Communication (NFC) chips, which is likely tobecome the standard by which mobile devices are identified at checkouts, Planet Retail noted.
