Uruguay has launched an umbrella producer group for the blueberry trade in a move which amalgamates the National Association of Blueberry Producers (Anpau) and the Uruguayan Blueberry Chamber (Cudelar), established in 1999 and 2005 respectively.

The newly-formed Union of Uruguayan Blueberry Producers (Uproa) will be chaired by Fernando Carrau, together with vice-chairman Martin Porcelli, and aims to unite the interests of all blueberry producers throughout the South American nation.

Prior to the creation of Uproa, both Anpau and Cudelar sought to promote the expansion of blueberry production, provide technical assistance to growers, incentivize the export trade as well as represent the industry before national and international authorities.

On account of the organisations’ similar objectives, members voted unanimously to unite the two bodies under one umbrella group to represent the entire industry.

In addition to Mr Carrau and Mr Porcelli, members also voted to appoint Pablo Levrero to the position of secretary, with Pedro Dondo as treasurer, alongside speakers Juan Pablo Furest, Diego Antelo, Christina Agorio, Albina Duarte and Carolina de los Santos.

Uruguay’s blueberry industry has expanded exponentially since the first 4ha was planted in 2001 to an impressive 800ha in 2008.
