Port of Hamburg inland containers

The Port of Hamburg has reported on a strong surge in seaborne container traffic between Hamburg and Poland during the first half of the year, with numbers jumping by 38 per cent to some 114,000 TEU.

According to the port's marketing authority, imports from Poland totalled 56,000 TEU in the opening six months of 2011, while exports to the country from Hamburg came in at 58,000 TEU.

This growth was a major talking point at a recent conference in Warsaw, organised jointly by the Port of Hamburg Marketing Representative Office in the city, emerpress and European Business Centrum, discussing the potential and the prospects of hinterland transport in Germany, Poland and Ukraine.

'As the easternmost port of the North Range, Hamburg offers ideal connections via Kiel Canal into the Baltic Sea and, with more than 150 weekly feeder departures, 15 to 20 to Poland, the port has the densest feeder network in the region,' the port noted.
