Increasing tensions between Turkey and Israel are threatening to disrupt trade between the countries, according to Uriel Lynn, president of the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce.

The cooling of relations has been triggered by last year's bloody raid by Israel on a Turkish flotilla bringing aid to Gaza.

Turkish prime minister Recep Erdogan said last week that Turkey was prepared to fortify sanctions against Israel, having already announced the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador.

'If the Turkish authorities decide to sever their trade relations with Israel, Israel will lose an excellent and important trade partner,' said Lynn. 'So far, despite the crisis, the trade relations between the two countries have not suffered.'

The total volume of trade between the countries is expected to reach US$4bn this year, after totaling US$2bn in the first half of 2011, a rise of 26 per cent compared with the first half of 2010, according to Port2Port.

Agricultural produce is a key part of Israel's exports to Turkey.
