onions

Spanish onion exports for the new season have so far increased by 14 per cent compared with the 2010/11 campaign, reaching 152,223 tonnes, with export value also up by 12 per cent to over €65m.

According to Alfonso Tarazona, president of the onion committee of Spanish federation Fepex, the positive growth in exports is helping the sector by proving a sales avenue for the major increase in production volumes experienced this year.

With greater volumes and a high product quality available, Tarazona said the committee was now focusing on consolidating exports to potential overseas markets, particularly those in Latin America.

Although the committee draws its membership from across Spain, the country’s onion production is largely concentrated in the eastern region of Valencia.
