Wonderful pomegranate

In the US, the Pomegranate Council has announced that growers of the fruit in California's Central Valley are reporting that the Wonderful variety harvest will be peaking soon.

The timing of the peak is dependent on the return of the cool evenings needed to bring the deep red colour to the fruit, the council noted.

'Fruit is sizing nicely, with the average size being larger than last season,' said Brad Paris, vice-president and general manager of produce for Pom Wonderful. 'If Mother Nature behaves, we expect to be able to ship promotable volumes of fresh pomegranates well into January.'

Meanwhile, new acreage coming into production is helping the industry keep pace with what the Council calls 'rapidly increasing consumer demand', as the industry braces itself for a new shipment record this year.
