One million Fairtrade-branded bananas are going to be distributed in Germany on one day next month.

Campaigns for Banana Day which will take place on 18 September 2008 are focused on the city of Cologne, which is where the headquarters of the Transfair organisation that owns the Fairtrade brand are located.

A Banana Bus is going to tour the Rhineland city, stopping off at a number of sites, including schools, supermarkets and even the city zoo, to promote the Fairtrade message.

The aim is to distribute 1m Fairtrade bananas in a single day, an action which the organisation says will help thousands of schoolchildren in Ecuador.

One thousand local schoolchildren will be taking part in the festivities, Transfair spokesperson Claudia Brück said in a press release.

A banana grower from Ecuador will also be taking part to highlight the impact that sales of Fairtrade bananas have on communities in the banana producing country.
