Fresh fruit and vegetable production in Turkey is thought to have increased last year, according to the latest statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) and reported by Tomatoes Today.

Vegetable production climbed 5.8 per cent to 27.5m tonnes from 26m tonnes in 2010, TurkStat noted, while fruit volumes grew 9.6 per cent from 16.6m tonnes to some 17.2m tonnes.

TurkStat revealed that the production of tomatoes increased by 9.6 per cent compared with the previous year, when Turkey produced over 10m tonnes of the fruit.

Tomato production in Turkey has shown a downward trend since 2008, making 2011 the first year in the last four to register an increase in production.
