US-based Berry producer-marketer Naturipe Farms has appointed Michael Bentel as its new director of food safety and quality assurance. Mr Bental has enjoyed a recent four-year spell as a regional quality control manager in the US.

Carrefour has announced changes to its management structure, adopting a board of directors instead of supervisory and management boards. At its first board of directors meeting, Amaury de Sèze was elected chairman, with José Luis Durán was named CEO.

The California Table Grape Commission’s Karen Hearn has been elevated to the position of marketing director. Ms Hearn has been with the commission for nine years, and will continue to manage retail accounts.

Peter Fry (pictured), who recently retired from UK retailer Tesco after 22 years with the company, has joined UK topfruit marketing group Norman Collett Ltd in a consultancy role. Mr Fry occupied the role of produce trading director at Tesco from 1995-2003.

The Soil Association, the UK-based organic association, has appointed Rob Haward as operations director on its Independent Standards Board.

Argentina’s new Agriculture Secretary Carlos Cheppi has taken the oath of office, replacing Javier de Urquiza who has decided to stand down following a four-month long stand-off between the country’s farmers and the national government.

Seald Sweet International has announced the retirement of senior vice-president of exports Jim McCranie. He will be replaced by Les Crocker, formerly of A Duda & Sons. Meanwhile, former director and product leader at Chiquita’s deciduous division Mark Lewis has been appointed executive vice-president.

The Italian fresh produce sector is mourning the untimely death of Nando Bonomo, CEO of Sicilian citrus specialist Gruppo Bonomo and president of the 3Moretti marketing cooperative, who died in August of a heart attack. Mr Bonomo, 42, was a leading light of the Italian fruit trade, and his business was one of Sicily’s largest citrus producer-marketers.
