UK asparagus in basket

Sainsbury's, the UK's third largest retailer by market share, has announced that it will be stocking 100 per cent British asparagus from this week following a later start to the season than in 2011.

According to the retailer, adverse weather conditions at the start of the season has resulted in a slow-growing campaign, but produce is of better quality.

'We're pleased to announce that customers will see deliveries of 100 per cent British grown asparagus in stores from today,' said Julien Roberts, Sainsbury's asparagus buyer. 'It's been a tough growing season for our farmers – despite the delay we anticipate this crop to be even better quality than usual as it's grown slower than usual.

'As we've seen such varied weather this spring and supply has been slow, I'd encourage customers to take advantage of the season while it lasts.'
