UK asparagus in basket

Fresh produce marketing company Pam Lloyd has urged UK consumers to make the most of domestically grown asparagus during the Jubilee celebrations at the start of June.

'After keeping us guessing and waiting and praying throughout most of May, that most British of vegetables has finally arrived, giving us plenty of homegrown asparagus in time for the long weekend and Jubilee celebrations,' the firm stated.

The first asparagus spears were harvested at the end of March, but since then supplies have been limited due to the unfavourable weather conditions.

However, with the recent sunshine and with forecasters predicting that more is to come, expectations are now running high.

'There are five weeks left of the official season,' Pam Lloyd stated, 'and the long term forecast for June currently is very positive with warm and dry conditions predicted – great news for growers.'
