Dutch firm Eosta is set to introduce climate-neutral kiwifruit from New Zealand to the European market. The fruit is grown by Freshco, The Fresh Fruit Company of New Zealand, which is the first company in the country to certify its kiwifruit as climate-netural.

The move follows Eosta’s introduction of climate-neutral apples and pears from South America, vine tomatoes from Holland and citrus from South Africa and Egypt, and is a direct response to consumers’ concerns about global warming. The emissions relating to all aspects of the fruit’s production and distribution are offset by Eosta’s innovative composting projects.

“It made perfect sense for us,” commented Greig Taylor, managing director of Freshco, “to compensate for the CO2 emissions which are caused by our kiwis during agricultural production, processing and distribution. We wanted to demonstrate that shipping fruit from New Zealand can be environmentally responsible.”
