The Bangladeshi government has placed a temporary ban on the export of some fresh produce items to ensure sufficient supply during Ramadan.

The export ban will cover green chilli, aubergine, onion and garlic and will remain in place until the end of August, the Daily Star has reported.

It is intended to stop prices spiking as demand increases during the holy month.

The vegetables covered by the ban would otherwise have been sent to markets in the Middle East and Europe to target immigrant communities.
