Scientists from French agronomic research centre Cirad have successfully sequenced the first banana genome, offering an insight into the fruit's evolution and paving the way for varietal improvement.

The findings of Angélique D'Hont and her team, which are reported this week in scientific journal Nature, provide a 'crucial stepping stone for genetic improvement of the banana', the researchers stated.

The latest DNA data of a key banana species known as musa acuminata is set to assist researchers in their efforts to protect cultivated bananas like the Cavendish, which, due to its lack of genetic diversity, is particularly susceptible to pests and diseases, including black leaf streak disease and Panama disease.

According to the researchers, the newly discovered biological blueprint will also help in the creation of varieties that are more tolerant to drought and are more nutritious.
