Two weeks after the start of Ramadan, prices of fruit and vegetables in Algeria are beginning to stabilise or even decline, according to a report from daily Le Temps d'Algérie.
Following a call from the Consumer Federation a week before Ramadan, prices of general consumer goods have this year been capped.
Tomato prices have fallen from last week's AD70-AD80 per kilogram (€7-€8) to AD40 (€4). Courgettes are being sold at AD70 (€7), half the price of last week.
Beans, peppers and aubergines have also reportedly followed the same pattern.
However, traders fear that this stabilisation will not last long and that the only solution to speculation is the reintroduction of public markets, with the state fixing prices and with controllers in each province.
