Ecuadorian bananas could benefit from recent talks

China and Ecuador have strengthened trade ties with the signing last Friday (28 September) of a number of agreements covering cooperation, trade and security.

Chinese delegates also signed agreements with the private sector to purchase US$33m in bananas, seafood and cocoa.

Meanwhile, Delegates pledged to expedite access agreements for products from Ecuador such as mango, pineapple and lemons.

According to a report by the Costa Rica News, China expressed a commitment to solving phytosanitary issues facing Ecuador’s banana exports and AQSIQ agents were scheduled to visit the country later this month.

Ministers from the two countries also agreed to undertake a study into bilateral trade that could form a platform on which to begin negotiating a free trade agreement.
