California pistachios

With the US pistachio harvest drawing to a close, the crop is set to hit a new record of 550m lbs this season, according to growers in the country.

Speaking to The Produce News, American Pistachio Growers executive director Richard Matoian said that while the number was high, it was still short of the 600m lbs forecast at the beginning of the season.

Crop quality is good, he said, although sizing is not as large as previous years, with around 60 per cent of the crop exported to, primarily, China and the EU.

Of the 250,000 acres of pistachios currently planted in the country, some 145,000 are producing, with the potential to boost the crop size up to 800m lbs by 2016.
