On the back of an impressive growth in volume over the last few years, San Gabriel UK has launched a logistics company called SG Fresh to handle all of its fresh produce imports and distribution in the UK.

San Gabriel UK, a subsidiary of Mexican lime specialist the San Gabriel group, expects the Kent-based facility to open during the course of this weekend, managing director Pedro Rodrigues told Eurofruit.

“SG Fresh is 100 per cent wholly owned by San Gabriel UK but will operate completely separately,” Rodrigues revealed.

“It will handle the coldstorage, re-packing and distribution services for us and other companies in the UK.”

The business will operate from a small warehouse in Rainham, Kent, and features brand-new cooling facilities.

Rodrigues said interest in SG Fresh’s services is already riding high, with other fresh produce suppliers pushing for an earlier opening date than the scheduled Monday 19 November.

If successful, the business model may also be replicated in the US, where the San Gabriel group recently launched a new import and sales company.

San Gabriel UK predominantly sources Mexican limes from the San Gabriel group but is working to expand its supply of other citrus fruits as well as table grapes and vegetables from both Mexico and around the world.

The full report will be published in the January issue of Eurofruit Magazine.
