The Consumption of fruits and vegetables in Spanish households for the month of September increased by 4 per cent whencompared to the same month in 2012, according to new data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

Figures showed that, in volume terms, consumptiontotaled some781.7m kg,while in value terms there was also growth of 4 per cent, up to €1.10bn.

Consumption volume growth in September was mainlydriven byvegetables, 5 per cent up on the same month last year, while potatoes increased by 8 per cent andfruit consumptionrose by 2 per cent.

In value terms, €547m was spent on fruit (+2 per cent), €391mon vegetables (+24 per cent) and €72m onpotatoes (+24 per cent).

According to Fepex, the continued upwards curve in consumption was the result of consumer support for the diverse range of produce on offer in Spain, as well as its quality, while also taking into account consumer awareness of the need for fruits and vegetables to ensure a healthy diet.
