Tanzania is battling to control the spread of the deadly banana xanthomonas wilt (BXW) disease is the country.
According to a report by the country's Daily News publication, more than 7,000 banana stems have been destroyed in the Kyerwa District following spot inspections.
One farmer who was found to have neglected his crop was fined TZS10,000 per infected stem, Daily News said.
In total, eight districts in the Kagera region have had confirmed reports of the disease. The region has an annual yield of 650,000 tonnes of the fruit.
