Eating mangoes

A new report from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries has revealed that fresh produce consumption fell in 2013 when compared with the previous year, despite higher spending.

'Food Consumption Facts in Spain 2013', presented by Miguel Arias Cañete and published by Fepex, outlined a drop in household fresh produce consumption of 0.4 per cent last year, down to 8.7m tonnes.

By category, fruit consumption dropped 2.2 per cent to 4.7m tonnes, vegetables consumption grew 1.8 per cent to 2.9m tonnes, while potatoes came in at 1.1m tonnes.

However, fresh produce spending actually climbed 4.4 per cent to €11.9m, with fruits up 3.6 per cent to €6.4m, vegetable sup 1.7 per cent and potatoes soaring 30 per cent to €868m.
