Almeria greenhouses

Tomatoes and peppers are the most profitable crops in Almeria’s greenhouse industry according to a recent analysis by Spanish bank Cajamar.

In its recent study “Analysis of the technology and profitability of Almerian greenhouses” the bank listed the growing combinations that yielded the highest returns for growers. It showed that the option that yielded the highest average returns was to grow two short tomato harvests, while the second best option was one long tomato production season.

In third place is a combination of pepper production during the autumn and winter months followed by watermelons in the spring and summer, while the fourth best option was one long pepper growing season.

Almería is the powerhouse of Europe’s covered horticultural production. The eastern Andalusian province produces almost half of Spain’s total vegetable output between January and July which is then shipped to supermarket shelves across northern Europe.
