Carrefour veg campaign

As a result of exceptional weather conditions during 2014 and major disturbances due to the Russian embargo, Carrefour, in partnership with Légumes de France, has decided to support local production of everyday vegetables, including carrots, potatoes, turnips, onions, chicory and shallots, during their peak season.

According to the retailer, 100 per cent of its seasonal vegetables will be homegrown and will benefit from special signage to alert consumers to the presence of Origine France vegetables.

This policy applies for every one of the chain's hypermarkets and supermarkets in France, be that around 1,200 stores, and became effective from 14 November.

Carrefour has long prioritised domestically grown produce, with activities this year assisting organisations of producers of tomatoes, stonefruit and melons.

'This effort is entrenched in our DNA and it is our responsibility as a distributor to promote and give value to 'Origine France' products,' said Noël Prioux, executive director of Carrefour France. 'This activity with Légumes de France, a first in the business, strengthens our local relationships with the farming world.'

Jacques Rouchaussé, president of Légumes de France, commented: 'Vegetables are facing an unprecedented crisis, and it is important that producers and distributors act together. We are particularly pleased with this partnership with Carrefour, with whom we have enjoyed excellent relations for several years.'
