Port of Valparaiso

Chilean exporters have welcomed decision by unions at the Chilean port of Valparaíso to go back to work following their latest strike.

Operations at Terminal 1 were suspended from 11am on Monday when around 500 stevedores staged a walkout over what they claimed were number of outstanding issues that had yet to be properly addressed by the port authority – a decision that was met with widespread condemnation from fruit producers and exporters.

Asoex praised the port’s efforts to honour its commitment to allow the country’s export sector to operate efficiently and competitively.

Around 1.2m tonnes of fresh fruit were exported from Valparaíso during the 2013/14 season, equivalent to 51 per cent of Chile’s total fruit exports.
