A group of fruit and vegetable producers in Argentina has reportedly marched through the capital Buenos Aires to demand better prices and lower taxes ahead of December’s national election.

The protestors, who apparently included producers of key export items such as blueberries and apples, were encouraged by the city’s mayor, Mauricio Macri, who is running in the election as the main opposition challenger to ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli.

“In December, we're going to set clear rules,” he told the assembled protestors. “We'll work together with farmers to restore growth.”

The country’s outgoing president Cristina Fernandez has come in for criticism from some members of the agricultural trade for imposing export quotas – mainly on beef, corn and wheat – in an attempt to keep local prices low.

But exporters have argued that this limits the profits they can make.

Another presidential hopeful, Sergio Massa, has vowed to reduce the limits on exports.
