Beta

Beta has announced plans to build a new packhouse in Olmos to handle it rapidly increasing blueberry and avocado production in northern Peru.

The company harvested its first 100ha of blueberries in Olmos this year and plans to add an extra 180ha in 2017, as well as 400ha of avocados. In total, it has invested in 1,000ha of farms forming part of the Olmos Irrigation Project.

Financial director Raúl Briceño told Gestión that construction of the US$3m facility is due to begin in 2017. From next year, more than half (53 per cent) of Beta’s production will come from the north of Peru and the rest from the south.

At present, the company’s Olmos production is packed in Jayanca, Lambayeque by a third party, but as volumes have risen, the company has decided to invest in a dedicated blueberry and avocado packhouse.

Beta already operates six packhouses in different regions as well as a processing plant for frozen asparagus in Ica that is currently being expanded.

China is one of the new markets the company has identified in its bid to diversify its exports.
