Leading kiwifruit marketer Zespri has said it is looking forward to a smooth transition from New Zealand fruit to European supplies following a positive end to the New Zealand season.

The company has reported strong demand for its New Zealand kiwifruit during the past few months, with volumes of Zespri Green and Gold fruit sold worldwide said to have reached record levels, exceeding initial estimates for 2008.

With the New Zealand export deal drawing to a close and sales due to end in week 48, the company said sales of Green and Gold showed strong growth not only in Europe, but also in the Middle East, Africa and India.

'The beginning of the season was superb thanks to the early start and high fruit quality, and the good sales momentum continued at the same level during the following months,' said a spokesperson. 'At this moment, Zespri is well ahead on sales volume compared with the previous season.'

The first volumes of Zespri Gold kiwifruit from Italy are set to be available from week 45, the company revealed, while Zespri Green supplies will come online in week 50.

The spokesperson added: 'Thanks to the consistent quality and taste of Zespri kiwifruit, no matter the origin of the fruit, Zespri has a very loyal consumer base. They chose Zespri for the consistent quality and impeccable taste of Zespri kiwifruit and this allows us a smooth transition between the different sources of supply.'
