Sainsbury’s has been named South African stonefruit retailer of the year after more than doubling sales during the 2015-16 season.

The prize is presented to one UK retailer a year in recognition of outstanding results and support for the category during the southern hemisphere stonefruit season.

It was delivered to Sainsbury’s headquarters in Holborn, central London, and received by the retailer’s head of fruit buying, Finbar Cartlidge.

General manager at South African grower group Hortgro, Jacques du Preez, said: “Sainsbury’s has worked extremely hard to develop sales of stonefruit during the winter season and has achieved really impressive growth of more than 100 per cent year-on-year. We are delighted to present Sainsbury’s with this year’s title of Stonefruit Retailer of the Year.”
