Mercadona

Supermarket chain Mercadona has announced a €180m investment plan to streamline and modernise operations and improve its energy efficiency.

The strategy to make stores “more efficient, spacious and comfortable” for customers will be rolled out to 125 stores nationwide and applied to new store openings. The retailer said it is expected to reduce energy waste by up to 40 per cent per branch.

The upgrade will include the introduction of wider aisles, a warmer colour palette and ergonomic tills incorporating screens for the customer.

The modernisation strategy will be rolled out to Mercadona’s 1,612 stores over the next decade at a cost of €2.4bn.

The chain also announced it will be investing €5m in research and development over the next 12 months.
