Spanish port workers have called off four days of strikes scheduled to begin on Friday at the eleventh hour after the government’s attempts to break the stevedores’ monopoly and bring the industry in line with EU regulations were rejected by Congress.

“We have revoked the strikes in the absence of the decree and an atmosphere of normality will resume so that agreement can be reached,” said union leader Antolín Goya.

Planned stoppages had been called for this Friday and alternative days next week. Negotiations are set to resume on Tuesday.
