Raspberries

Angus Soft Fruits has announced it is picking its first Scottish raspberries of the season this week, a full ten days earlier than normal.

The fruit is of the Vajolet variety, which the producer has the exclusive rights to grow in the UK.

John Gray, Angus Soft Fruits’ commercial director, said: “It has been a mild winter and spring, which has helped the crop to develop fruit earlier than normal.”

The Vajolet crop will not be the first of the Scottish season, with Berry Gardens grower Ross Mitchell reported to have launched early-season Maravilla raspberries at Waitrose on 19 April.

Mitchell grows the fruit in polytunnels heated by carbon-neutral biomass boilersat Castleton Farm in north-west Scotland.
