Meradona new store

Mercadona has opened the first two of its new efficient supermarkets in the province of Valencia.

More than €3.5m was spend on converting the stores, which use 40 per cent less energy than a traditional store and feature a new layout to improve distribution and optimise the buying experience for customers.

This includes wider produce aisles with freshly-squeezed orange juicers, new lightweight shopping trolleys and improved communal zones for workers.

The stores have been insulated and fitted with double-glazed windows and LED lighting systems to reduce energy consumption and feature fully integrated technology to streamline the supply chain by providing staff with real time information on stock levels in each department.

Mercadona is to invest €180m in 2017 to convert 126 stores across Spain to its new efficient model.
