CMA CGM Group celebrated its long-standing relationship with the Chinese city of Shanghai this week.

The shipping giant hosted Yong Ying, Mayor of Shanghai, at its headquarters in Marseille yesterday (4 July).

Ying has travelled to the French city to mark 30 years of twinning between Shanghai and Marseille. He highlighted the role CMA CGM has played in developing relationships between the two cities.

“There is a fruitful cooperation between Shanghai and CMA CGM,” Ying said. “The CMA CGM Group has demonstrated strong skills that are useful for the Port of Shanghai.”

CMA CGM’s relationship with Shanghai began in 1992 when the group’s founder, Jacques Saadé, opened an initial agency in the city. At that time, CMA CGM's vessels were capable of transporting 250 containers and called into China every 15 days.

Fast-forward to the present day and CMA CGM makes calls in China every three hours, with the capacity to transport up to 18,000 containers per ship. The group has more than 3,000 staff in the People’s Republic across 61agencies. It offers five weekly services from the Port of Shanghai to France.

“Since our establishment in Shanghai in 1992, we have built a strong and long-term relationship, with respect and trust, a relationship that is bound to continue,” said Rodolphe Saadé, chief executive of CMA CGM Group.
