Mandatory country of origin labelling is to be introduced in Italy, according to Luca Zaia, the country's Minister of Agriculture.

Speaking at a meeting organised by Italian farming organisation Coldiretti, Mr Zaia confirmed that a bill passing the requirement into law would be put forward at the next Council of Ministers.

'This is about defending the strong identity of our farming companies,' commented Mr Zaia. 'The alternative is to allow multinational companies unfettered access.'

The move follows increasing concern in Italy about the safety of products imported from overseas, particularly milk from China.

According to a recent survey conducted by Coldiretti and Swg, 90 per cent of Italians believe Italian products are safer.
