Mercadona

Mercadona has posted record sales of €24.4bn last year, a 6 per cent increase on 2017. Despite record levels of investment, the retailer saw profits jump 84 per cent to €594m.

The Valencia-based company, which operates more than 1,600 stores throughout Spain, increased its market share to 27 per cent, more than triple its nearest rival.

More than one in every four euros spent on food in Spain now goes to a Mercadona store.

“This year we are stronger than ever in our history,” said president Juan Roig during a press conference in Valencia to present the company’s results.

“Before we were obsessed with making money. But we have changed, we are more concerned about the client and we the results have been spectacular.”

In 2018, Mercadona pumped €1.5bn into expanding its store network and launching an online presence.
