An order for ten new container ships, and a cooperation agreement to develop efficient and environmentally-friendly vessels have been confirmed between CMA CGM and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and chief executive officer of the CMA CGM Group and Lei Fanpei, Chairman of the CSSC signed the two strategic agreements in the presence of French president Emmanuel Macron and Chinese president Xi Jinping.

CMA CGM will commission ten new 15,000 TEU containerships which will be delivered from 2021 in replacement of ten other vessels to be used across Asia-Mediterranean lines.

The vessels will be equipped with environmentally-friendly technologies, with five powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and five fitted with hybrid scrubbers to eliminate sulphur and other fine particles emissions.

In a separate deal, Saadé and Fanpei also signed an “ambitious” cooperation agreement to develop more efficient and environmentally-friendly vessels.
