Agrexco strawberry

The first shipments of the new season’s strawberries from Agrexco are due to arrive in the UK in the middle of November.

According to the Israel-based company, a combination of premium varieties, such as Yuval and Orly, and volume-oriented types like Tamar, Hadas and Yael, will allow Agrexco to cater for “varying purses” in the UK.

Ian Crispin, Agrexco UK’s sales manager, said that the credit crunch was causing UK consumers to cut back their spending, particularly concerning exotics. However, he added, the health benefits of strawberries and the fact that they are more accessible than the likes of blueberries, both in availability and price, mean that they are likely to remain popular with consumers.

According to Agrexco, this season’s crop is expected to be a similar size to last season’s, and the season should last until the end of March.
