SanLucar is highlighting the vital role played by bees in fruit production and the efforts it takes to protect the bee population on its farms.
“SanLucar does everything to make sure that the busy bees on the plantations are doing well, and that they can fly from flower to flower to collect pollen and complete the pollination,” the company said.
The company uses only biological agents on its apricot’s fields during the blooming period – if required – which are completely harmless to bees, and they are only applied at night, when the bees are in their hives and no longer flying around.
“On our apricot fields in southern Spain, beekeepers take care of the wellbeing of the insects. They set up hives and check for queen bees to build new colonies,” the company continued.
In berry production, all of the company’s quality experts have a certificate of competence for plant protection that covers bee preservation.
“They know exactly which products are not dangerous for bees and when they are allowed to use them.”
The company has also set up resting areas for bees on the fields containing different wild flowers, as well as bee hotels and scree slopes where the small insects can hide.
And it has applied colour markings on all of its greenhouses used for strawberry cultivation in Andalucia to help the bees to find their way back to their hives.
