Maraic

A new Swiss apple called Mairac will be presented for the first time at the international apple trade fair Interpoma today by the Consortium of South Tyrolean Nurserymen and Valois Distribution EURL, ahead of its official launch on the European market next spring.

Visitors to the event, which takes place in Bolzano, Italy on 6-8 November 2008, will have the chance to taste the apple, which is described as a sweet, tart fruit with a full-bodied, fruity flavour.

Swiss retailers have reportedly begun stocking the new apple variety and VariCom, the company which manages the licensing of Maraic as a registered trademark, is hoping to attract leading grower organisations in Styria, Slovenia, Lake Constance and the Loire Valley.

A newly launched website www.mairac.eu will provide information about the variety’s introduction into the European market.

VariCom comprises four members, including the Consortium of South Tyrolean Nurserymen, Artus Group and webfruit of Germany and French group Mondial Fruit Selection.

The company’s managing director is Michael Weber, also managing director of webfruit.

Harvested at the end of September, all Maraic apples grown in Switzerland and at trial orchards in Styria, Slovenia, Vinschgau Valley, Lake Constance and Loire Valley have apparently showed excellent external and internal quality.
