Tesco is set to release a new range of fresh produce in the UK that takes advantage of the alterations to marketing standards in the European Union that govern the required shape and size of fruit and vegetables.

The supermarket will sell a package containing an oversized carrot, onion, swede, butternut squash and sweet potato for £2.50 (€2.95), dubbed the 'Monster Bunch' box, according to a report in The Telegraph.

Of the new product, Tesco's vegetable buyer Jonathan Corbett said: 'They are so big they look like they've come from the land of the giants, or at least the prize stall at the annual horticulture show.'

European Union member states voted in favour of new EuropeanCommission (EC) proposals repealing existing rules governing themarketing standards on certain fruit and vegetables during early November.

'We have been anticipating the lift of this ridiculous ban by the EC for some time now, which is why we are ready to launch our Monster Bunch box so quickly,' Mr Corbett added.

The move, which applies to 26 different types of fresh produce,is part of an EC plan to simplify regulations and cut red tape. It will come into force on 1 July 2009.
