Sainsbury's is set to axe 200 jobs from its head office in London as part of a restructuring programme to cut down on costs.

According to a report in the Financial Times, CEO Justin King informed staff of the decision on Wednesday (21 January), with a consultation process determining how many jobs would be lost.

The group will be moving from five main business units in its trading division to three, consisting of non-food, grocery and fresh food, the publication reported.

However, Sainsbury's confirmed that it would carry through with plans to add up to 5,000 staff to the group through store openings.

Earlier in the month, the retailer recorded what it described as its 'best ever Christmas performance'with like-for-like sales over the past 13 weeks up by 4.5 per cent, excluding fuel.
