Food retailer Spar is to extend its Eurospar format to mainland Britain for the first time following the purchase of 11 Somerfield stores from the Co-op, according to a report in Retail Week.

Eurospar stores are larger than traditional Spar convenience outlets, covering 5,000-10,000 sq ft and offering shoppers a fuller range of products.

There are currently around 30 Eurospars in Northern Ireland, but none in England, Scotland or Wales.

Spar's managing director Jerry Marwood told Retail Week: 'We see good growth for Eurospar on mainland Britain and once we get a couple up and running we will look for further growth and are looking at some of the Woolworths stores.'
